From the Danube to the Rhodopes

From the Danube to the RhodopesDay 1 - Arrival of the group at Rousse border point. The group will be met by a qualified professional tour guide. Transfer to a 3-star hotel in Rousse, accommodation. The town of Rousse is situated on the Danube river and is one of the prettiest Bulgarian towns, famous for its European style architecture. Dinner and overnight in 3-star hotel.

Day 2 - After breakfast, departure for the Ivanovo Rock Monastery. The Ivanovo Rock Monastery includes many medieval monk cells, churches and chapels built-in the rocks along the Roussenski Lom river. A colony of settlers lived here in the time between 3rd c. A.D and 17th century A.D. The natural caves in the rocks were enlarged and shaped to serve the needs of the monks. The walls display frescoes and painting with scenes from the Bible. The monastery was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list in 1979. Sightseeing of the monastery and departure for Veliko Turnovo. Veliko Turnovo is situated on the banks of the Yantra river on three hills. It was the capital city of the second Bulgarian Kingdom. The town is very picturesque, with its houses built amphitheatrically on the slopes of the hills. Visit of the Tzarevetz fortress - fortress of the kings of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. Conitnue to the romantic town of Tryavna, a typical Bulgarian town that has preserved Bulgarian traditions and culture. Tryavna is famous for its wood carving and icon painting school. Accommodation and dinner in a 3-star hotel.

Day 3 - After breakfast departure to the capital of the Thracian kings and the rose valley - Kazanluk. Visit to the Thracian tomb, dating back to 4th c. B.C. The Thracian tomb is the oldest tomb in Europe with perfectly preserved paintings, a proof for the great culture of the Thracian civizlization. Departure for Plovdiv. The six hills and the romatnic old town give to Plovidv an unique atmosphere. Accomodation in a 4-star hotel in the center of town. Sightseeing of the old town, a typical example of Bulgarian Renaissance architecture. Visit to the Roman amphitheater dating back to the 2 c. A.D and the Ethnographical museum. dinner in a rustic restaurant. Overnight.

Day 4 - After breakfast departure to Devin, located in the Rodopi mountain range. Devin is a famous spa resort with beautiful nature, fresh mountain air and a bunch of mineral springs. Dinner and accommodation in a 3-star hotel in the town.

Day 5 - Before lunch departure to Bansko via the picturesque Rodopi mountains. Sightseeing of Bansko with visit to the St. Trinity church (1832-1835). Dinner in a typical local tavern ( grilled dish specialties) with men choir perfromance. Accommodation in a 4-star hotel.

Day 6 - Departure for the Rila Monastery - Bulgaria's biggest and most famous monastery, located in the Rila Mountain Range. The monastery was founded in the 10 th century by St. Ivan Rilski. Optional lunch in a restaurant nearby the monastery with fresh grilled trout. Contiue to the capital city of Sofia. Vist to the St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral with 12 guilded domes, the biggest cathedral on the Balkan peninsula. Sightseeing of the Russian church and the Rotunda of St. George, the oldest church in Sofia, dating back to 4th c. A.D. Folk dinner in a local restaurant in the city center - typical Bulgarian specialties and exclusive folk show. Overnight in a 4-star hotel in the city center.

Day 7 - Visit to the National Historical Museum and departure of the group for Kalotina.
