A voyage through the history of Bulgaria and Macedonia
Bulgaria was founded in 681 and has played an important role for the preserving of Christianity throughout its centuries-old history. Christinaity was introduced as an official religion in the second half of the ninth century by the Bulgarian King Boris The First. The Cyrillic alphabet was introduced by two Slav brothers - St. Cyril and St. Methodius in the late ninth century and was quickly spread thorughout the Balkan peninsula. The Bulgarian kings contributed to the spread of Christianity through the establishment of the Old Church Slavic liturgy. The monasteries, being educational and cultural centers took part in the struggle for preserving of the national spirit and culture during the time of the Turkish rule (14th-19th century).
Macedonia is an ancient name, historically related to Philip II of Macedon, whose son became Alexander the Great, founder of one of the great empires of the ancient world. As a regional name, Macedonia, the land of the Macedons, has been used since ancient times for the territory extending north of Thessaly and into the Vardar River Valley and between Epirus on the west and Thrace on the east. In Alexander the Great's time, Macedonia extended west to the Adriatic Sea over the area then called Illyris, part of today's Albania. Under the Roman Empire, Macedonia was extended south over Thessaly and Achaia.Beginning in the 5th century AD Slavic tribes began settling in the Balkan area.
