Bulgarian towns
 There are many reasons to fall in love with some Bulgarian towns and to dislike others. Of course, as this website is intended to reveal Bulgaria's best sides, I will not get into details why I don't like some Bulgarian towns, I will just skip mentioning them here. So, this will be a tale about the best Bulgarian towns.
Let's start with Plovdiv. No, I am not from Plovdiv, myself, do not be mislead. But one cannot resist instantly falling in love with the Bohemian atmosphere of the town, with its beautiful setting - on five hills in the heart of Bulgaria's most fertile land - the Thracian valley. Plovdiv is a town with a big heart. The most romantic part of it is the Old Town, where you can walk on the cobbled streets and climb to the top of the hill to find the Roman amphitheather that dates back to 2nd c. A.D. Today, every year in June here takes place the Verdi Festival - an opera festival that features amazing performances.
Eumolpia, Philippopolis, Pulpudeva, Trimontzium, Pulden, Filibe -- those were the ancient names of Plovdiv throughout its 6000 to 8000 years of existence. As you can see the town is one of the oldest towns in Europe and hides remains from Thracian, Roman and medieval times. Apart from its rich historical background, one can find beautiful examples of Bulgarian National Revival style houses from the 18th and 19th century - colourful, symmetrical architectural creations, reminding of the glorious past of the town.
Today the town is a modern city with eclectic town landscape. It has about 500 000 inhabitants and is the second biggest town in Bulgaria. Plovdiv's restaurants, bars and cafes are hard to resist, so plan a lot of free time while in town.
