Bulgarian villages

Many Bulgarian villages, which have preserved their traditional appearance and genuine spirit, situated in environmentally clean regions, open their doors with hospitality to those willing to share the preserved rich Bulgarian traditions and folklore, agriculture, delicious and varied local cuisine and preserved old crafts.

The Bulgarian village atmosphere can be experienced in Bozhentsi, Arbanassi, Ribaritsa, Zheravna, Kovatchevitza, Leshten, Dolen, Momtchilovtci, Shiroka luka, Bistrilitza etc.

Leshten is a typical picturesque Bulgarian village located in Southwest Bulgaria in the Pirin mountain range. The village of Leshten has about 30 houses. The architectural style of the houses is typical for 19th century Bulgaria. All of the houses are situated on the main street, which goes through the village. The main street is covered with cobbled stone or “kaldarum”. There are opportunities for hunting, fishing, riding, mountain walking.

Kovachevitza is a beautiful Bulgarian village tucked away in the South-western part of the Rhodopes at an altitude of 1050 m above sea level. In Kovachevitza you can find picturesque canyons, a crystal-clear river, amazingly green forests. The village will reveal to you the every day life of 19th century Bulgaria with its old houses and cobbled-stone streets. There are about 50 people who live there nowadays. Its climate is moderate, with a mild winter and a cool summer. Nearby flows the Kanina River, known for its three deep ponds, the abundance of mountain trout and its magnificent waterfalls. The village was founded at the end of the 17th century AD. The first cell school was built in 1830, and its church St. Nikolas – in 1848, turning Kovachevitza into the cultural center of the entire region. Kovachevitza has repeatedly served as the natural historical stage for the shooting of numerous films. In 1977 the village was declared a national architectural and historical reservation.
